Where can you go to eat if your kids are craving Philly cheese steaks, you’re hankering for teriyaki chicken, and your significant other is yearning for jambalaya? Connoisseurs’ Marketplace — Menlo Park’s gourmet extravaganza, July 19-20 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Santa Cruz Avenue — is the spot. This year’s event will have 16 vendors offering everything from the classic rib-sticking street fare to creative vegetarian alternatives from around the globe.
Those Philly cheese steak fans will be in heaven with B Food International’s French roll piled high with close to eight ounces of grilled beef mixed with onions, bell pepper and mozzarella. Their falafel sandwiches are filled with plump rounds of ground garbanzo beans flecked with parsley and drizzled with a sesame tahini sauce. Lamb lovers will opt for the Greek gyro sandwich, a pita stuffed with spit-roasted minced lamb, cooked onions and a cucumber-yogurt sauce. From down on the bayou, New Orleans Catering cooks up a sumptuous southern medley of chicken and sausage jambalaya, seafood gumbo, a spicy crawfish étoufée and blackened shrimp with rice. Seafood is also a specialty of Aroma Catering, where the selection includes crispy fried calamari with cilantro-lime sauce, succulent barbecued oysters and delicate crab cakes. Their tri-tip and portobello mushroom sandwiches are equally tempting, not to mention the garlic fries.
Sweet Delights uses portobello mushrooms in burgers as well as the base for their famous stuffed mushrooms filled with mozzarella cheese, zucchini, red peppers, tomatoes and pesto. Belgian fries are fried twice for an exceptionally crispy texture, and serve with their “fiery” sauce of garlic, jalapeños, cilantro and Parmesan cheese. To top it all off, they make funnel cakes to order and serve them with fresh fruit, ice cream and whipped cream. Kauai Abreu Ohana delivers a taste of Hawaii with Kahlua shredded pork, which has been slow-cooked for eight hours and seasoned with Hawaiian salt. They use a smoke-barbecue technique for their teriyaki sauce beef and chicken, served either in a sandwich or over rice with macaroni-tuna salad.
Lockeford Meat & Sausage can turn anyone into a sausage lover with their German-style smoked bratwurst, a blend of pork, beef and garlic served with onions and sauerkraut on a hoagie. Menlo Park Lions Club offers classic all-beef hot dogs as well as smoked pork Polish dogs. From south of the border, Main Street Food Concessions will prepare handmade Salvadoran pupusas, pockets of corn masa flour stuffed with cheese and green onions, served with cole slaw and pico de gallo salsa. They will also offer fish tacos, fish and chips and Caesar salad. Asian food aficionados will have plenty to choose from at Sonoma Teriyaki, famous for its chicken marinated in garlic, ginger and soy sauce and grilled on a skewer. The chicken also comes served over steamed rice with vegetables. Vegetarians can try the made-to-order fried rice, chow mein rice noodles or steamed rice with vegetables and homemade teriyaki sauce. California Barbecue is another Asian option, with soy sauce–garlic chicken and pork kabobs; a teriyaki chicken, vegetable and rice bowl; and a Peking chicken wrap—a spinach flour tortilla stuffed with chicken and vegetables in hoisin sauce.
Connoisseurs’ Marketplace is also a sweet tooth’s nirvana, with four vendors dedicated to delicious desserts. Kurlander Soft Serve will swirl frozen yogurt in flavors ranging from classic chocolate, vanilla and butter pecan to piña colada, creamsicle, and mysterious blue goo. Kurt’s Kettle Corn and Concessions offers more frozen treats with their shaved ice flavors including tiger’s blood (strawberry/coconut), orange-pineapple, wild cherry and lemon-lime. Kids can go to the flavor station and combine flavors to their hearts’ content. Kurts also spins candy on the spot, in silly nilly (pink vanilla) and boo blueberry (blue raspberry).
Kicks Bakehouse and Catering makes ice cream sandwiches with their house-baked cookies and a generous scoop of ice cream. Dark chocolate cookies are paired with mint chip ice cream, chocolate chip with vanilla, and snickerdoodles with strawberry. For a daintier dessert, they have created sorbetto sandwiches. Chocolate shortbread comes with mango sorbet, lemon shortbread with berry, and lavender shortbread with lemon. Wonder Ice Cream sells old-time ice cream cups, bars and fruit bars. And for a quick snack and a satisfying drink, there’s Suitcase Ron’s irresistible kettle korn and Barrett’s refreshingly tangy lemonade.
The Margarita King — The World’s Best Margarita — offers festivalgoers another refreshing beverage alternative. Margaritas will come in many variations: there’s the “King Cocktail” (basic margarita), the “Miami Vice” (margarita with a splash of pineapple juice), and the “Girlfriend” (margarita with a splash of pomegranate juice). Beer lovers will be delighted with the assortment of tasty brews — Sam Adams Summer Ale, Sam Adams Boston Lager, Fosters, and Miller Lite. Sip your favorite beverage in a beautiful wine or beer glass adorned with the stylish festival logo. Spacious seating areas with umbrella tables and chairs will be located throughout the festival route.
