Nebulous Theorem Blasts into Dream Machines

Bonneville streamliner designer Jack Costella will be exhibiting three of his eight Bonneville streamliners at Dream Machines. His eight vehicles are known as Nebulous Theorem I through VIII.

Jack is a Dry Lakes Hall of Fame member and has set over 20 records and belongs to the 200 MPH club and the 300 MPH club. All the streamliners together hold over 60 national and International records.

The cars are constructed as true hot rods in his backyard workshop in San Jose. They range from 16 feet long (Neb IV) to 28 feet long (Neb III). Nick Rock has ridden Nebulous IV a 250 cc motorcycle streamliner (which the rider lays on his or her stomach) 207 MPH and holds close to ten records. Erin Hunter riding Neb IV holds an FIM International and National record at a speed of 146 MPH with an 80 cc engine, and is the first woman motorcycle streamliner record holder! Jack and Andy Sills also hold records riding Neb IV.

Nebulous II, was the vehicle that got Jack into the 200 MPH Club with a speed of 239 MPH in 1992. It was then campaigned by Jim and Mary True. They set two National records of 248 MPH driven by Jim and 229 MPH driven by Mary. They also set an International record of 253.786 MPH. Finally campaigned by Rick Yacoucci, with a Suzuki engine that was modified by Rick to run on both two and four cylinders, turbocharged and naturally aspirated. Then in five years set over 35 records with a top speed of 360 MPH. This vehicle is the fastest 4 cylinder record holding vehicle in the world. Rick and Nebulous II was also three times SCTA points champion.

Neb VI a 500 cc lakester built by Jack and partner Glen Dennee is driven by Glen’s daughter Michele. Michele in her first ride set a record at 133 MPH at El Mirage Dry Lakes and plans to do the same at Bonneville.

Nebulous Theorem, the meaning … these vehicles are built with unconventional designs. Jack uses designs and ideas that are unexplained and different from accepted theory; hence “Theorem”, and a little cloudy at that! Or something like that!
