In March of 1988, biker visionary “Sidecar” Willy and his friend Bubba were sitting on their favorite bar stumps at the Cabbage Patch in Daytona Beach, Florida, reminiscing about the just-finished Bikeweek. In his day, Willy had raced four wheelers, wheelers and two wheelers. He was ready for something new. The only thing left was single wheelers. That night, “Sidecar” Willy and his compatriots filled several cocktail napkins with sketches, scribblings and ideas that officially launched the Unicycle Dirt Drag Racing phenomenon.
In 1991, the American National Unimotorcyclists Society was established providing safe venues and the sport’s “Ten Commandments,” the official guidelines set up to govern the sport. By 2002, Unicycle Drag Racing had become an international motorsport with world championship events held annually in Daytona Beach and Sumiswald, Holland.
The concept of Unicycle Drag Racing is to travel, from a standing stop, 100-feet on one wheel with the winner determined by fastest time. Races are held on dirt to minimize the injuries from the crashes that may occur. Unicycles in competition are limited to 4’ in width and 8’ in length.
Moss Beach resident Jim Holsman met “Sidecar” Willy at a recent world championship event in Holland. Holsman is determined to spread the Unicycle Drag Racing virus and has organized a Unicycle Dirt Drag Racing exhibition to be held at this year’s Pacific Coast Dream Machines, April 27 at Half Moon Bay Airport.
