Wearable Art

“My work is one of freedom and flow,” said Carmel Valley jeweler Bob Schuh. “It reflects my lifestyle and my being.” Schuh uses precious stones from California and Arizona to make earrings, pendants, bracelets and rings. When time permits, Schuh even demonstrates the art of jewelry making in his booth. Denim never goes out of style. Alice Khteian brings her denim designs into the new millennium by helping the environment – all of her creations are made from recycled jeans. Check out her interesting vests, T-shirts, sweatshirts, skirts and purses. If you love vintage jewelry, make sure to visit Mendocino resident Frances Casey. The artist uses glamorous vintage buttons and glass to create antique, hand-beaded button jewelry that is truly stunning. Does your little girl need an updated ‘do? San Jose residents Anthony and Peggy De Maio will make sure your daughter’s tresses are neat and chic with princess-inspired ponytail holders and headbands. Their “Once Upon a Wish” collection also includes fairy wands, halos, wings and puppets. “Believe it or not, we sell just as many items to teenagers as well as little girls,” Peggy DeMaio noted. “They go to the festivals and wear them around the fair.” Just because flip flops are about to be tucked away in the summer drawer doesn’t mean you can’t wear a sexy toe ring during the holiday season. Monica Pineda’s “it girl” toe rings are adorned with diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires. The perfect accessory for holiday galas and New Year’s Eve soirées!

Sculpture and Mixed Media

Virgi Bondi of Roseville creates modern-day Faberge eggs using quail, finch, goose, emu and ostrich eggs. The U.S. Navy reservist is known to her friends and family as the “egg-making, military police, biker chick.” Bondi uses high-speed dentist tools to carve eggshells. Egg themes range from intricate

Faberge-inspired to 217 different dog breeds tucked inside Christmas ornaments. In the electronic age, writing has become a lost art. However, Janet Buyers loves the personal touch of letters and cards. Her beautiful embossed papers and gift bags are perfect ways to express your sentiments during the busy holiday season. San Francisco artist David Gaines adds a punch of color to any wall with his decorative switch plates. Gaines makes mini-art prints and bonds them directly onto metal plates. He seals his work with resin so switch plates can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. Choose from famous art prints, famous movie stars, flowers, animals and seascapes. Foster City artist Jessica Archibald designs coasters and trivets with vibrant photographs of Northern California and Europe. Beautiful photos are transferred onto wood and sealed with a heat-resistant varnish. Archibald also makes matted photographs and note cards. Sometimes it takes just one unique sculpture to add drama to an important room. Monterey artist Nick Leonoff uses hand-blown art glass for his vessel forms, bowls, vases, fruit sculptures and custom pendant lights. Each piece is dramatic and unique, with colors ranging from warm amber and swirled orange to vibrant teal and cool purple. “The luminescent quality of glass appeals to me as it responds to light,” Leonoff explained. “I am drawn to the potential of a material that can vary from a translucent to an opaque medium in a brilliant range of colors and gradations.”

Functional Art

A name or memorable date adds a sentimental quality to a special gift. Redding artist Orinda Sears makes personalized clay Christmas ornaments – an excellent choice for a new bride and groom, growing family, teacher or friend. Make 2007 a year to remember with an ornament nobody else will have. “It’s touching because people collect them and they become family heirlooms,” Sears said. “That’s what motivates me.” Two years ago, Jim Lanier’s daughter, Jamie, asked for a limousine for her sixth grade graduation. Lanier agreed – as long as she could come up with a plan to pay for it. Jamie learned how to make hand-turned wooden pens with her mom and dad. Her pens are dyed and inlaid with stars, diamonds and diagonals. Today, business is good for the Montara residents – they have sold over 4,000 pens! Rita Watkins takes the catch phrase “behind every successful man is a great woman” to the next level. Her captivating collection of inspiring women can be found on hand-painted tiles, mirrors, backsplashes and end tables. Watkins, a resident of Fowler, CA, is inspired by women’s fashion in old movies. The fashion buff paints women from the Renaissance to the modern day. If you are on a quest for a perfect present, step into Earnestine Nelson’s Antique Sleuths booth. The San Jose seamstress sews beautiful handmade quilts, Christmas tree skirts and stylish totes. She also sells wine bottle holders and pillows. Case closed! Sharon Jansen can solve any woman’s jewelry storage dilemma. Her fabric jewelry totes, eyeglass cases and tissue holders are convenient and keep precious items safe. In addition, the Angwin resident has designed a line of cooling neckbands and headbands. Once wet, polymer crystals turn into a cool gel. “The neckbands and headbands are wonderful to wear in the heat of summer,” Jansen said.

Fine Art

Take a break from the hustle and bustle while listening to romantic, relaxing piano music by Jeffrey Michael. The Hermosa Beach musician is known for his serene, peaceful sounds. Westpoint resident John Reid enjoys painting landscapes and seascapes. He is inspired by beautiful California and Tuscany. The artist paints with both oils and watercolors in soft, soothing colors. A lone ship, solitary barn and a seaside village – Reid’s work is soothing and tranquil. Beautiful mermaids from far away lands … gossamer fairies dancing under the moonlight … boastful dragons looming near ominous castles … Mishell Swartwout is world famous for her ethereal, acrylic paintings. Her gorgeous prints are matted and framed. Michael Ho, a resident of San Leandro, amazes his customers with the ancient Chinese art of embroidery art. Ho begins by drawing an image on fabric, and then uses thousands of stitches to illustrate flowers, animals and landscapes. A small picture can be completed in a day or two, but a large embroidery can take several months. Aptos photographer Tom Jacobs sees extraordinary elements in ordinary objects all over the world – a distressed barn in Vermont, a colorful fishing boat in Ireland, an Amish cyclist in Ohio. “One of the joys of creating fine art photography is that it forces you to be in the moment,” Jacobs noted. “All other distractions fade away as you concentrate on creating simplicity from the beauty of a scene.”
